Goathead War
My girlfriend and I recently bought a new house in Santa Fe, NM. The backyard is big, but obviously has been nothing but a weed patch. My dogs first steps into the yard were ended quickly by goatheads. We spent weeks cutting and digging all the weeds, swept the yard to get the loose goatheads and foxtail seeds, and even wrapped an old blanket around a trashcan and rolled it around the yard picking up more goatheads. Then we put in about 250 ft2 of buffalo grass plugs on 1 ft. centers overseeded with blue gramma. The grass is doing beautifully, but so are the weeds. We are spending hours a week crawling around on our hands and knees, but we finally have the goatheads on the run. We tried a 24D herbicide in a test patch, but it killed the gramma seedings and browned the buffalo, so we gave it up. Had I known about a weed torch at the time, it would have saved me a lot of trouble now. --Trent
